Lynton, the heart of the Exmoor National Park !

The rural town of Lynton provides the ideal base to discover the wild serene beauty of this stretch of the North Devon coast.

Standing high on the rugged cliff face above the picturesque harbour village of Lynmouth, where the Exmoor National Parks meets the sea, Lynton is an attractive village with a timeless appeal.

Yes, it has a range of cafes, restaurant shops and museums but it looks and feels the same as it did centuries ago.

It’s elevated position delivers the most exquisite panoramic views that you could ever wish to encounter, combining majestic seascapes, sweeping moorland and luring sheltered bays. No wonder the Victorians affectionately referred to the region as ‘Little Switzerland’.

Board the famous water powered funicular cliff railway to enjoy the best views as you glide up and down the 862 foot track between the two towns.

If you’re a walking enthusiast you will love this area. A brief coastal walk along the South West Coast Path will take you to The Valley of Rocks, a dry valley with spectacular rock formations than runs parallel to the coastline and is home a herd of native British goats. Scale the Castle Rock for the best vantage point to see the natural shape of the valley below.

Alternatively, head the other way for a stroll along the East Lyn River valley, one of Britain's deepest river gorges, to Watersmeet where, as the name suggests, two rivers come together.

For a different view of the area make sure you ride the famous Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. Climb on board the iconic team train to enjoy unrivalled views of the sea on one side and wild moorland on the other as you meander on the picturesque gauge railway.
