ABBA Voyage: The Review

If time travel existed, I would set one of my destinations as Wembley on 10^th November 1979 to enjoy an ABBA concert in all its glory. Alas, what I experienced in October 2022 was the next best thing: a family trip to ABBA Voyage to celebrate my dad’s 60^th birthday.

The laughs started when we revealed our outfits – a joyous mix of 70s flares, sparkling glitter, colourful sunglasses and dodgy wigs – and continued throughout the night. My dad and his partner Susi went full Benny and Frida and kept being stopped for photos (or people would try and take sneaky ones as we walked past, it was like they were celebrities)! After a drink and some more snaps, we decided to get our spot on the dancefloor. While you can get seated tickets in the impressive purpose-built ABBA Arena, standing tickets are recommended to get in the mood for dance, of course!

Soon enough, the lights went low, the music started and the four iconic figures rose from the stage. I’ll never forget my Uncle Pete in that moment; frozen to the spot, open-mouthed and staring up in wonder at ABBA in their heyday. Combining ground-breaking technology and spectacular lighting, the result of the digital ABBAtars is truly jaw-dropping – we really couldn’t believe what we were seeing. As they journeyed through their setlist of crowd-pleasing favourites and a few hits from their comeback album, we forgot that we weren’t actually watching humans! Capturing the essence of ABBA in their prime, there are costume changes, band interaction and uncanny moments of speech, all giving the effect of a real-life gig. I must admit I felt a bit emotional at first; it was so special experiencing songs from my childhood coming to life with my family. I won’t ruin it, but another surprise comes at the end – one that will really make you question what’s real and what’s not!

All in all, this celebration went down in the Merron history books as one of the best ever. It was a truly unforgettable evening of singing, dancing, laughing, passing round the inflatable guitar and just having the time of our lives! I would ABBAsolutely recommend this sensational show to anyone and everyone, as it really does need to be seen to be believed.
