Melrose, a picture-postcard town.

Melrose may not jump out as a holiday destination but it warrants closer inspection.
The town is located on the south of the River Tweed and surrounded by the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills which provide a haven for keen walkers.

For such a small town, Melrose has an unrivalled history. The Romans arrived in the area in AD79 and built a large settlement named Trimontium. Reminders of the town’s Roman heritage can still be seen today at the Trimontium Museum where you can uncover facts about Roman life in Scotland.

Nearby Melrose Abbey also boasts a fascinating history for you to uncover. Now a ruin, following invasions by English armies on two separate occasions, the abbey is the burial site of a casket believed to contain the heart of Scotland’s most famous son Robert The Bruce.

A little known fact about town is that the game of Rugby Sevens was invented here in 1883. Holiday in April and you could get chance to see the world’s best teams play.
Head a few miles west and you can also enjoy Abbotsford House, the romantic mansion of Sir Walter Scott, whilst keen gardeners will love Priorwood and Harmony Gardens, a garden totally dedicated to dried flowers.
A great place to explore the Scottish Borders and venture further afield to discover the Northumberland coast and Edinburgh.
