Chateau de Villandry
An included visit to the splendid Chateau de Villandry, the last of the great Renaissance Chateaux to be built on the banks of the Loire River. Bought by the Carvallo family in 1906 and lovingly restored, it was opened to the public in 1920. Still owned by the family today, the Chateau has been elegantly decorated and contains exquisite furniture, but it is its gardens for which it is most famous with three levels including a vegetable garden, water garden and stunning ornamental flower garden. We include admission to this beautiful Chateau to ensure an excursion you won’t forget on this splendid seven day adventure.
A visit to the fantastic city of Angers, set in the heart of the Pays de la Loire region. A mix of historic and cultural gems, great shops and cafe/bar culture it is famous for its impressive castle, originally, built as a fortress at one of the sites inhabited by the Romans because of its strategic defensive location, now hosting the large medieval tapestry of the ‘Apocalypse’ commissioned by Louis I and produced between 1377 and 1382. It depicts the story of the Apocolypse from the Book of Revelation by Saint John the Divine in colourful images, spread over a number of sections that originally totalled 90 scenes. Despite being lost and mistreated in the late 18th century, the tapestry was recovered and restored in the 19th century. Why not take a stroll in the many parks and gardens, browse Angers speciality markets or indulge yourself in the famous Cointreau distillery or ‘blue chocolate’ factory.
