The Beamish Open Air Museum

Set in 300 acres of Durham countryside, Beamish is an award-winning attraction in the North East which gives visitors a real sense of how people lived in the region from the early 1800s to the 1940s.

Beamish is totally different to any other museum you will ever visit. Its artefacts are brought to life through a variety of recreated towns and villages which have been rebuilt from original buildings from across the region, with people dressed in costumes actively reliving the story of everyday life in the area.

Experience what life was like as a Georgian milk maid, see rare animal breeds and ride a replica of "Locomotion No.1" built by George Stephenson in 1825 as you head to 1820s Pockerley.

Fast forward to the 1900s and you can see how families lived and worked in a traditional town. Remember your ‘divi’ book for the local co-op, have a pint in a traditional pub and buy a treat for the way home in the traditional sweet shop and bakery. Travelling through the town is easy using the tramway or horse drawn carriage.

Discover the region’s coal mining past as you join the local mining community in the traditional Pit Village and take a trip underground on a guided tour of a drift mine before learning about the history of mining lamps and working lives of pit ponies.

Contrast this with life on a 1940s farm to learn about how people lived on the Home Front at the height of the Second World War. Meet Land Girls and the Home Guard, see ‘make do and mend’ in action as you discover the important role played by the region’s farms during the wartime effort.

A great attraction for all ages.
